Chapter 35 On the Road

"Nothing behind me. Everything ahead of me, as is so on the road"  Jack Kerouac/  On the Road

Place:  All over the Omo Valley

Time:  Why do I keep filling this line out?

A few snap shots from the road. Nothing sexy. Nothing artsy. Just camera noise. But perhaps some interesting insights into Ethiopia.

I took these shots either from the windshield, a bus,  or when I briefly stopped.

Truck accident on the jungle road

Our obligatory armed escort. Apparently the Mursi can get out of hand...especially if they start drinking and firing off weapons...

Livestock litter the road ways. If you can make it a half mile without dodging cows, sheep, goats, dogs, donkeys and people, then you are really moving....

I sip a coffee with the locals while I wait for the rain to stop.

This man has 5 wives...and more patience than I will ever have.

This is what happens when you drive a truck off a cliff. The driver survived. Accidents like this litter the roadways with no way to clean them up.

The jungle road accident from before.  Our jeep on the left.

Face plant.
"Go home truck, you're drunk!"

Mining sand from the jungle river.

Our Mursi hitchhiker gets ready to bathe while Lalo gets his truck washed by the locals in the jungle river.

Our armed escort. He reminded me a lot of Sulu on Star Trek with his mannerisms.
I really liked this guy.

Now just what to do with this stuff if I were to buy....

Ethiopia has some of the most stunning natural scenery I have seen anywhere.

Herding goats

The Master Goat Herder has it all under control.

Constuction in Addis. These guys actually look like they know what they are doing.

These cheeky boys are chewing Chat, an intoxicating plant and skipping school.
What? its Saturday?....oh.....well.....I guess they are just chewing Chat.

The incredible Rift Valley...a terrible geological scar across the face of Africa that extends from Ethiopia all the way through Kenya.

Shooting from the hip...a windshield shot.
